The internationally beloved form of American music – jazz – will be celebrated in a series of free concerts in Grand Central Terminal’s Vanderbilt Hall between October 8 and October 15, 2009. Performers range from Americans who grew up with the idiom to musicians from France and Italy who were drawn to the music and have developed distinctive styles within the genre. The series of free mid-day and evening concerts are part of the Columbus Celebration 2009, which include the Vanderbilt Hall exhibit, Veneto: A Bridge Between Venice and New York (Vanderbilt Hall, through October 17) and New York City’s Columbus Day Parade (Fifth Ave. from 47th to 79th Streets, October 12).
The performances are sponsored by the Region of Veneto and Veneto Jazz, an Italian cultural association that organizes concerts of jazz and contemporary music, art exhibitions, and the prestigious, Europe-based Summer Jazz Workshop / Bassano del Grappa in collaboration with the New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music of New York. Veneto Jazz’s Artistic Director, Giuseppe Mormile, in 2008 produced the inaugural edition of the Venice Jazz Festival, a month-long series of concerts held throughout Venice in the summer.
