Cynthia Sayer’s Hot Jazz Banjo Show

Cynthia Sayer’s Hot Jazz Banjo Show
Thursday 3/15
Award-winning instrumentalist/vocalist/bandleader Cynthia Sayer is acclaimed by musicians, critics, and fans alike as one of the top 4-string jazz banjoists in the world today. Her eclectic, swing-based shows embody the rarely heard range and versatility of the 4-string banjo in the hands of a master, celebrating historic jazz banjo stars, Vaudeville, American Songbook favorites, virtuoso classics, fun anecdotes, and more.

Sayer first rose to international prominence as a founding member of Woody Allen's New Orleans Jazz Band, all the while exploring her wider musical interests and playing with jazz, popular & roots artists such as Bucky Pizzarelli, Dick Hyman, Wynton Marsalis, Andy Statman, Wycliffe Gordon, Scott Robinson, Scott Bradlee’s Postmodern Jukebox, Marvin Hamlisch, John McEuen (Nitty Gritty Dirt Band) ), Charlie Giordano (with Bruce Springsteen’s E Street Band), and many others.

Herbie Hancock 'still learning,' ...

Herbie Hancock 'still learning,' as eclectic music icon works on new album with Kendrick Lamar, Wayne Shorter and more

by George Varga - Contact Reporter
march 2, 2018

If anyone is surprised that such hip-hop stars as Common, Kendrick Lamar and Snoop Dogg have been recording with Herbie Hancock for the 77-year-old jazz keyboard legend’s next album, they haven’t paid attention to this genre-leaping maverick’s career.
The as-yet-untitled album also teams 14-time Grammy Award-winner Hancock with saxophone giant Wayne Shorter, who was his band mate in the fabled Miles Davis Quintet in the 1960s. And it features West African guitar ace Lionel Loueke, Indian tabla master Zakir Hussein and such young hip-hop and jazz-funk dynamos as shape-shifting producer Flying Lotus, bassist-singer Thundercat, tenor saxophonist Kamasi Washington and alto saxophonist and keyboardist Terrace Martin.
Loueke and Martin will perform in San Diego as members of Hancock’s latest band on Wednesday at the Balboa Theater in a concert presented by the La Jolla Music Society. The lineup is completed by bassist James Genus and drummer Vinnie Colaiuta, who also performed with Hancock at the keyboardist’s 2011 Balboa Theater concert.

Martin, 39, is producing Hancock’s still-in-progress album, after having previously done production work for Lamar, Snoop, Stevie Wonder and others. Hancock, in turn, has inspired at least two generations of hip-hop performers, thanks to his futuristic 1983 instrumental hit, “Rockit.” It has been sampled on more than 70 recordings by such diverse artists as Eric B. & Rakim, Grandmixer DST, Janet Jackson and C&C Music Factory.

Improvisational Time Capsules - Meditations

David Cain is a composer, performer and member of the award-winning improv trio, Wertico Cain & Gray. His latest album, MEDITATIONS, is the story of improvisational time capsules, moments of musical meditation. The spontaneous recordings were inspired by the memory of Cain’s composer-mentor, Dr. Roque Cordero. Cain says: “Roque taught me the importance of connecting to musical flow through daily improvisational practice, leading to idea development, orchestration... resulting in possibilities that might exist outside the usual boxes of melody, harmony, structure, and norms.”

Describing his piano improvisations as ‘meditations with the muse,’ David Cain brings together a lifetime of musical influences that ‘honor the past and welcome the future’. Before recording each improvisation, Cain would “ask the muse for inspiration and guidance.” The results: each improvisation creates its own atmosphere: elegiac and ecstatic, soulful and blithe…

Here are 19 Meditations along with their date/time of birth.
