100 Years On, the First Recording of Jazz Tells the Story of America

One hundred years ago, the first commercial recordings of jazz were released by the Original Dixieland Jass Band, a group of white entertainers from New Orleans. The most famous of them was the "Tiger Rag," recorded in 1917, shortly before the group changed the spelling of its name to Original Dixieland Jazz Band.

Today, it ranks among the most recorded compositions in the American songbook, but at the time, the song carried an undertone of racism. It would be decades before the genre was transformed into the sounds of the likes of Duke Ellington and Wynton Marsalis.
