As they settle on stage and ready their instruments, there is more than a few nerves among the young musicians about to perform at the biggest school jazz band competition in Australia.
The band is called 81 Days, in a comic nod to how long they have been playing together. Three band members only started playing this year.
These twelve fledgling musos from Naracoorte appear in sharp contrast to many of the polished, award-winning outfits from schools across Australia which they are sharing the Generations in Jazz (GIJ) stage with, some of whom have been playing together for years.
Naracoorte High School's music teacher, Meredith Schinckel, admits the small country school got to the long-running competition "by the skin of their teeth".
