Eleuterio Yribarren

Eleuterio Yribarren was born in Navarra, Spain and came to Argentina in the 1910's. He was a composer, conductor, pianist and played various reed instruments. Yribarren was one of the first Jazz musicians in the River Plate area of Argentina. He lead his first band in 1917 which played mostly Spanish and Gypsy songs.
In 1923 he started to record jazz with his new band under the names of the American Jazz Band and Red Hot Panamerican Jazz, among others. Yribarren's band played in the most famous cabarets of Buenos Aires in those days, such as Tabaris. Besides being a musician Yribarren directed the first Argentine sound film short was in 1929. It was called "Mosaico Criollo", and it was recently found and restored. For more information about this film in Spanish click here. He also composed music for other directors silent films. Yribarren died in Buenos Aires on October 25, 1932.
