Antonio Seidemann talks to the German guitarist Monika Roscher about her approach to composition, about music needing beauty as well as the elements of ugliness at times, about her big band, as well as about listening to historic examples of jazz for the musicians' attitude more than for just the notes ( TZ München). --- Khaya Cohen sees the recent fusion of hip-hop with jazz elements as a potential breeding ground for new directions not just in hip-hop but also in jazz ( Earmilk).

George Varga talks to the pianist Kenny Barron about his start in music in the band of Roy Haynes, about how Dizzy Gillespie hired him for his band in 1962 when Barron was merely 19 years old on the recommendation of saxophonist James Moody alone, about the lyricism in his playing, about his desire to nurture young musicians in his own band, as well as about his dream to record with strings ( San Diego Union-Tribune ). --- This year's JazzAhead! trade fair in Bremen, Germany, will showcase bands from Switzerland, and Hans Hielscher sheds light on the Swiss scene, some of its traditions, its creative musicians and its financial support system ( Spiegel Online).

We read further obituary about the late David Baker ( Washington Post, Wall Street Journal). --- We learned of the passing of the bassist Terry Plumeri at the age of 70 ( ABC Action News), the singer Bill Henderson at the age of 90 ( Variety, Hollywood Reporter), the entertainment lawyer Seymour Lazar at the age of 88 ( New York Times), the drummer Dennis Davis ( Rolling Stone), the Ethiopian saxophonist Mekurya Getatchew at the age of 81 ( New York Times), as well as the Austrian clarinetist Alfons Würzl at the age of 75.
