Institute of Jazz Studies to welcome NEA Jazz Master and 14-time Grammy nominee Toshiko Akiyoshi with Lew Tabackin

Toshiko Akiyoshi’s recordings have received a total of 14 Grammy Award nominations. A perennial Down Beat poll winner, Toshiko has also received the Shijahosho (1999, from the Emperor of Japan); the Japan Foundation Award, Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Rosetta (2004, from the Emperor of Japan); and the Asahi Award (2005, from the Asahi Shimbun newspaper). In 2002 Toshiko retired her big band projects and returned to the piano, touring as a trio and sometimes a quartet with her husband, tenor saxophone/flute star Lew Tabackin.

For this performance Ms. Akiyoshi and Mr. Tabackin will be accompanied by Mark Taylor drums and Yasushi Nakamura, bass.
