“If Luciana did nothing more than sing, she’d still be a miracle.”— The Wall Street Journal
The brilliant Brazilian jazz singer/songwriter Luciana Souza brings a new supergroup and new songs to 92Y this November. Celebrating the transcendence of the language of music that is beyond words and genres, most of the ensemble’s music is wordless, except for its use of two poems by the great Leonard Cohen.
Souza is joined for this project by Benin-native and guitarist extraordinaire Lionel Loueke, Swiss-born harmonica virtuoso Grégoire Maret, bassist Massimo Biolcati, of Swedish and Italian descent, and Texan drummer Kendrick Scott, finding common ground in rhythm and the joy of music without boundaries. Their new album, Speaking in Tongues, comes out this September.
