Maverick Concerts ....

Milton Glaser 2015, gift of the artist

As vigorous and vital as it was the day the festival was conceived by its founder, Hervey White, Maverick presents a brilliant season of Music in the Woods and has commissioned works from four esteemed composers, to celebrate the centennial with four world premieres.

JUNE 27: The veteran percussion group NEXUS opens the season with Peter Schickele’s
Percussion Sonata No. 3, “Maverick.”1

JULY 7: Guitarist and composer Frederic Hand and flutist Paula Robison perform Four Pieces for Flute and Guitar, a new piece by Maestro Hand. 2

SEPTEMBER 13: The American String Quartet bring the platinum jubilee to a joyous
conclusion with George Tsontakis’ String Quartet 7.5 (Maverick). 3

The oldest summer chamber music series in America, the Maverick has served as the blueprint for all others that followed. Maverick Concerts preserves Hervey White’s vision, and we honor and sustain his incomparable legacy. Hervey was the founder of the collaborative Maverick Art Colony, and it was his notion to present “Music in the Woods” on summer afternoons. He conceived the idea
of a hand-hewn “music chapel,” and artists and other volunteers and friends built it in 1916. The hall is now a multi-starred attraction on the National Register of Historic Places, its superb acoustics ideally suited to the intimacy of live chamber music performance.

The Catskill woods will ring with great music all summer long. We hope to welcome you many times — this jubilee summer of 2015, and into the next century!
