Dizzy's Club Coca-Cola

March 23, 2015

The Manhattan School of Music is a long-time fixture in the New York music scene and prides itself to be one of the first conservatories in the United States to acknowledge the prime importance of jazz as an art form. The Manhattan School of Music Concert Jazz Orchestra features some of the world’s most talented emerging artists. These talented young musicians prove that the spirit of swing is alive and well, and that the future of jazz is in extremely capable hands. Tonight, the Orchestra takes on the music of Wayne Shorter, a masterful composer and one of the most transformative figures in music. Joining them onstage will be NEA Jazz Master saxophonist Dave Liebman.

Pianist Joey Calderazzo presents a trio at Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola to celebrate the release of his new album, Going Home, just a few days before it becomes available to the general public. Calderazzo is a highly respected musician in the jazz community, whose debut album was produced by Michael Brecker when he was only 25 years old. He has led and played with many of the greats, including his longtime musical partner Branford Marsalis. This new trio album features mostly originals, plus the classics “My Foolish Heart” and “Stars Fell On Alabama.” The originals were written without “too much structure,” emphasizing improvisation and group interplay as a means to expand on foundational moods, feelings, or sketches. Especially given the repertoire, the trio features an ideal rhythm section of bassist Orlando le Fleming, known as a highly reactive, thoughtful listener who regularly challenges his bandmates, and drummer Rudy Royston, a powerhouse drummer with great stylistic versatility, both of whom are group leaders and prolific sidemen.
