We had an exhilarating week in Seattle recording at Robert Lang Studios and playing two packed shows at The Royal Room! A crew from NPR's Jazz Night In America flew out to film and record the shows for a national broadcast and webcast later this spring. Jim Wilke featured the live performances on Jazz Northwest this week, you can listen to the podcast here.
Peace and gratitude, Steve and Ingrid
We launched this project to honor and celebrate the life, legacy, and music of the great jazz trumpeter and composer Kenny Wheeler who left us last year. His stunning compositions and imaginative improvisations have left deep impressions on generations of musicians and listeners. This project is led by Seattle-based saxophonist Steve Treseler and NYC-based trumpeter Ingrid Jensen. Read Ingrid's tribute to Kenny on Ethan Iverson's blog "Do the Math."
For those of you who would like an introduction to Kenny's music, his most critically acclaimed albums on ECM are among his best:
- Gnu High, featuring Keith Jarrett (his last record as a sideman), Dave Holland, and Jack DeJohnette
- Music for Large and Small Ensembles, featuring his brilliant large ensemble writing
- Angel Song, featuring Lee Konitz, Bill Frisell, Dave Holland
We will be recording with a stellar band:
- Ingrid Jensen - trumpet
- Steve Treseler - tenor saxophone
- Katie Jacobson - voice
- Geoffrey Keezer - piano
- Martin Wind - bass
- Jon Wikan - drums
