By George Varga2:51 P.M.OCT. 10, 2014Festivals devoted to films about music are few and far between, as Rick Bowman and Jonathan Bewley are well aware.
So, come next month, the veteran San Diego filmmakers will debut the Point Music Film Festival, which they hope to make an annual event.
To be held at the 10th Avenue Arts Center, across from the old, now-shuttered downtown library, the day-long Nov. 8 fete will feature 10 films that cover a diverse array of music styles. It will also feature live performances by the bands James Ream & The Barnstormers, The Grind, The Mike Michaels Program, The Palominos and Johnny High-Hat,.
Five of the documentaries that will be shown are the products of San Diego filmmakers.: "It's Gonna Blow!!! San Diego's Music Underground 1986-1996"; "Portrait in Piano: Gustavo Romero"; "There's Nothing Out Here: A San Diego Concert Film (which features nearly two-dozen local bands)"; "Herschel Sizemore: Mandolin in B" (which is directed by Bowman); and "Steve White: Painting the World with Music" (a documentary about Leucadia's veteran one-man blues band, who died of cancer in 2011).
