storyteller, a jazz musician and a south Bethlehem site that combines creativity and healing are the recipients of Bethlehem Fine Arts Commission awards, given out Tuesday night.
The 2014 Tribute to the Arts Awards went to professional storyteller and theater artist Mary Wright, jazz musician and professor of music at Moravian College Neil Wetzel and Cafe The Lodge, a restaurant that provides recreational, educational and cultural opportunities for adults with mental health challenges.
"These are people we call cheerleaders for the arts," said Barbara Faust of the commission, who presented the awards during a reception at the Kemerer Museum of Decorative Arts. "They have promoted art to change lives."
She said Wright of Bethlehem has "done everything" from being an ensemble member of Touchstone Theatre to being a lead storyteller to creating the nonprofit Friends of Liberty Theatre at Bethlehem's Liberty High School. She noted Wright also leads Touchstone's Young Playwrights Lab, teaches at Pennsylvania Youth Theatre and is a founding member of the Lehigh Valley Storytelling Guild.
