Charlie Agnew

Charlie Agnew worked with several dance orchestras in the Chicago area before forming his own outfit in 1924. Considered one of the finest sweet dance bands of the era, Agnew's group earned a strong following in the Midwest and appeared on such radio programs as The Armandes Face Cream Program and The Lucky Strike Magic Carpet.

In 1940 Agnew took his orchestra to Las Vegas, where they enjoyed an extended stay at the newly opened El Rancho, the first hotel-casino on the city's now famous strip. During that period the group recorded for Columbia with Jeanne Carroll as vocalist.

Agnew also wrote several songs during his career, including ''Fools in Love,'' ''Too Many on My Mind,'' and the band's theme, ''Slow but Sure.'' Charlie Agnew died in 1978.
