LIBERTY TWP. — Alan Nordyke lives and breathes music.
He is the jazz band director at both the Lakota West and East main campuses, as well the Lakota East Freshman Campus. He previously was the band teacher at Liberty Junior School from 1990 to 2012.

The Wilmington High School graduate was greatly influenced by his own junior high and high school band director and private trumpet teacher, Charles Carothers. It was Carothers’s enthusiasm and positive approach to teaching that first gave Nordyke the desire to pursue a career in music education.

Throughout his high school and college career, Nordyke’s passion for music education and teaching style was influenced by numerous teachers, professors and experiences.
Nordyke’s professional affiliations include the Ohio Music Education Association, Music Educators National Conference, Lakota Education Association, Ohio Education Association, National Education Association and Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia.

Q: What has been your educational journey?
A: I graduated from Wilmington High School in 1985 and from The Ohio State University in 1989. I have continued my education with coursework through Walden University, Andrews University, University of Dayton, University of Miami, Drake University, College of Mount St. Joseph and Xavier University.
I am currently in my 23rd year of teaching. I started my career in 1990 as a band director at Liberty Junior School.

Q: Why did you become a teacher?
A: I became a teacher to make a positive difference in the lives of young people. The teachers I was blessed to have had a huge impact on my life, and I wanted to be able to help students discover and develop their own individual strengths through musical learning.

Q: What do you enjoy most about teaching?
A: What I enjoy most about teaching is observing the individual and group musical progress that takes place as the school year progresses. It is very rewarding to see the students progressing from where they started, one step at a time, as their good becomes better and their better becomes their best.
