Chuck Wilson grew up listening to great jazz music at The Lighthouse Cafe in Hermosa Beach. His aunt was married to Howard Rumsey, the bassist who owned and operated Concerts by the Sea from 1971 to 1985 at the club following his formation of the Lighthouse All-Stars in the 1950s.
"As I got older, Howard would let me come in and listen to the bands as long as I was out of the way, not bothering anybody," recalled Wilson, a Hermosa Beach resident. "It was a great experience growing up listening to amazing music. It didn’t reflect on me to become some kind of great musician because I struggled with it my whole life, but it made me want to be a musician."
Wilson's love of music never abated. He eventually became a musician in his own right, playing the blues, while following other career paths including real estate and race car driving. Wilson recently pursued another entrepreneurial path: opening Studio 637, an audio and video production company in Hermosa Beach. Located at 637 Cypress Ave., the studio offers everything from music recording to live streaming concerts. The studio also has its own boutique store, which features one-of-a-kind guitars, amps and Moog synthesizers. When Wilson opened earlier this year, his new business soon became more diversified than he expected.
"All of a sudden by throwing this business out to the world, we’ve had more commercial video work done, reality shows using the studio, just every other type of video production that exists separate from music, that I didn’t have the wildest dream would happen," Wilson said.
"We’ve had times where we had a hand model here in the morning and a rock band here at night or Telemundo doing a commercial. It’s been a wild ride," said studio manager/video editor Nick Angilello. "We’ve had a couple reality shows in here, Oxygen network's new show called 'Preachers of L.A,' which is all about modern L.A. preachers. Then we had 'Chef Wanted' with Anne Burrell, she was in the studio."
Music is still a focus of Studio 637 with recording, mixing and mastering going on in the state-of-the-art studio that also uses vintage recording techniques from a Trident mixer to decades-old microphones. Musicians also have the opportunity to film their music videos, with or without green screen. Live streaming is also available.
