Laura Jurd and Greg Sterland both play Herts Jazz Club, at Campus West, this evening (Sunday).
The original Herts Jazz College Collection gig was cancelled due to snow earlier this year.
Supported by the PRS Foundation for Music, organisers are presenting an octet and a duet for an evening of interesting contrasts from some of the top young British jazz musicians.
Trumpet player Laura Jurd is already making quite a name for herself following the release of her CD, Landing Ground, which was number two in The Guardian’s jazz albums of 2012.
John Fordham, in The Guardian, said: “Jurd’s striking themes suggest English, Spanish and Scottish folk melodies, and (on the beautiful Happy Sad Song) something of the wry lyricism of Kenny Wheeler.”
The Laura Jurd Octet, from the Trinity Guildhall School of Music, includes Elliot Galvin on piano, Conor Chaplin on bass, Corrie Dick on percussion, Mandhira de Saram and Patrick Dawkins on violins, Richard Jones on viola and Ben Davis on cello.
