Berklee College of Music is teaming with the online course platform Coursera to develop four free online courses taught by some of the school’s most popular instructors.

BerkleeMusic, the college’s award-winning continuing online education program, will offer the classes to students around the world starting in the spring of 2013.

The four planned classes are: jazz improvisation with six-time Grammy-winner Gary Burton; music production basics with Loudon Stearns; introduction to guitar with Thaddeus Hogarth; and songwriting with Pat Pattison.

"Berklee is committed to helping talented artists create the world's next big musical idea,” Roger Brown, President of Berklee College of Music, said in a statement. “Coursera gives us a way to reach people all over the world, many of whom have no access to music education, and provide them with the opportunity to learn at no cost from great innovators like six-time Grammy-winning vibraphonist Gary Burton.”

Coursera has partnered with top universities and professors from around the country to offer a variety of online courses for free.

BerkleeMusic, now headed into its tenth year, offers more than 150 online courses and multi-course certificate programs

Emerson College also recently announced a partnership with Berklee to offer joint online courses.
