8/30/2013 @ 11:04AMNew Orleans’ Preservation Hall Jazz Band has released its first recording of entirely original material as part of its 50th anniversary celebration.
Called “That’s It!,” the album features all-new compositions by band members Ben Jaffe, Charlie Gabriel, Rickie Monie and Clint Maedgen. Paul Williams; Dan Wilson, who writes for Adele; and Chris Stapleton also collaborated on several songs.
The recording is available as a CD, in MP3, and as a vinyl LP, which includes a poster.
It is the brainchild of Jaffe, tuba player and creative director of both the band and Preservation Hall.
The son of band and hall co-founders Allan and Sandra Jaffe, Jaffe grew up in New Orleans, studied music at Oberlin College and returned to New Orleans in 1993 to play with the band.
After Hurricane Katrina—which shut the hall for several years—Jaffe went through the band’s archives, part of which were destroyed by Katrina. That experience and the band’s 50th anniversary (it was founded in 1961 by the Jaffes) “opened our minds to the idea of our responsibility to our community,” Jaffe said.
“All the musicians are from families that have been musicians for generations. Our clarinet player, Charlie Gabriel, is 81 and a fourth-generation player. He talks about learning from older musicians. What they do is not documented anywhere,” Jaffe said.
“All the great music our tradition comes from was new at one time. It’s part of our responsibility to make sure that what we are remains a living, breathing art form. We don’t want to become something that lives inside a museum, on a wall. We want to be part of people’s lives,” he added.
