We have to let go of summer, so we might as well send it out properly. There's quite a party scheduled in the mountains for Labor Day weekend, and it's one of the events of the year for the straight ahead jazz faithful.
The 19th Annual Vail Jazz Party sports another promising lineup, including the excellent Clayton Brothers Sextet featuring trumpeter Terrell Stafford, trombonist Wycliffe Gordon and drummer Lewis Nash, who are among the best sonic sculptors in the music at this point. Drummer Jeff Hamilton returns with his trio, vocalist Curtis Stigers, Denver saxophonist Tia Fuller, and percussion master Poncho Sanchez are all being promoted as participants this year.
Also slated: guitarists Bruce Forman and John Pizzarelli, singer Lavay Smith and Her Red Hot Skillet Lickers, and a lot more. The Vail Jazz Foundation seems determined to outdo itself every year in terms of the lineup, and many artists play in various combinations and jam sessions. The music begins on Aug. 29 and concludes on Labor Day, performed in a handful of Vail locales. The best thing to do to get an idea of the scope of the performances, venues and lodging would be to visit vailjazz.org.
