Hammond-Feature in memoriam Ray Manzarek
The radio station Saarländischer Rundfunk aired a Hammond feature on occasion of the death of Doors keyboarder Ray Manzarek and interviewed Barbara Dennerlein for this. Barbara was asked about what makes the Hammond a special instrument for her, why she fell in love with the sound of the instrument and who influenced her musically. She also explained the technical background of the sound generation. To her, the Hammond requires pedal play from the organist, which is often neglected in jazz and rock music. Utilizing the whole instrument with hands and feet leads to a completely different play than just playing the manuals like keyboarders usually do.
