The 'Heart of the Matter’ is the new record....

REVIEWS
Listening to this album before reading anything about it, I formed my own impressions of the selections and her interpretations. Then, after reading the press releases and speaking with Monheit, it became easy to understand why this jazz album succeeds. Primarily, it’s all about lyrics, lyrics, and more lyrics

Content wise, I found this over-produced and a bit of a snoozer (think early 70′s strings, flutes, etc.). I’m not sure I’ll be queuing this one up many times, but I did enjoy the experience of listening to it. One track that I really liked was “”Born to Be Blue”" and another one that caught my attention was “”Long and Winding Road.”" The Spanish tracks were pretty cool, but I hard a hard time relating to the bossa theme listening to Jane, it didn’t compute for me. Most of the other tracks were lullabye or soft love songs. She seems to be in a good place in her life now and the music is all about love.

One minute she’s dazzling you with her resonant bebop-ready chops and the next she’s making you cry with a single verse of a ballad. On her ninth studio album, 2013′s Heart of the Matter, Monheit brings all of her gifts to bear on a set of mature, heartfelt songs that rank among her best.
