RUMOR 73

RUMOR 73           UTRECHT              29 MAY   2013

Simon Nabatov – Vredenburg Leeuwenbergh
Simon Nabatov, a remarkable pianist and composer, was born in Moscow, Russia, in 1959. Since his father was a musician, Nabatov’s first steps into the world of music came very early. At the age of three he began learning to play the piano; by his sixth birthday he was composing. He later attended the Moscow Conservatory. In 1980, Nabatov entered New York’s famous Juilliard School of Music. Over the following years Nabatov worked with many well-known jazz artists like Kenny Wheeler, Chet Baker, Ray Anderson and Nils Wogram. He is well known for jazz tone-poem responses to Russian authors. Nature Morte is a setting of a poem by Joseph Brodsky and The Master and Margarita an all-instrumental response to the novel of the same name by Mikhail Bulgakov.

Mohammad  – ACU
Mohammad is a chamber music trio consisting of Coti K (contrabass), ILIOS (oscillators) and Nikos Veliotis (cello). Based in Greece, Mohammad make long drone works that explore the lower end of the frequency spectrum whilst retaining an intense emotional capacity. The results are monumental slow moving physical blocks of sound, both daunting and musical. The sheer weight of these recordings is impressive, the interplay of the musicians and instruments staggering, this end result being an music  with immense harmonious abstraction which highlights years of dedication to their unique path.

Flat Earth Society  – RASA
FES is Belgium’s most original and most adventurous ‘big band’. Their anything but traditional ‘big band’ music betrays many different influences. Even though they still feel uncomfortable when the word ‘eclectic’ is used to characterize their music, it is hard to find a better term. FES musicians are not singled out for their technical skills, although this is  obviously not unimportant.

They are first and foremost chosen for their personality and creativity, which makes for great diversity. Leader Peter Vermeersch, composer, reed player and producer (of, for example, the first CD by dEUS and Raymond van het Groenewoud) and his musicians, and also the musicians among one another, make such a good team that the whole surpasses the sum of its parts. And even after 13 years FES still stands for an electrifying performance.

Peter Vermeersch – artistic leader, Stefaan Blancke – trombone, Berlinde Deman – tuba, Bruno Vansina – baritone sax, Bart Maris – trumpet, Michel Mast – tenor sax, Marc Meeuwissen – trombone, Kristof Roseeuw – double bass, Luc Van Lieshout – trumpet, Benjamin Boutreur – alto sax, Peter Vandenberghe – piano & keyboard, Teun Verbruggen – drums, Pierre Vervloesem – guitar, Wim Willaert – accordion & keyboard, Tom Wouters – clarinet & vibraphone
