With a direct line to the 1930s and 40s Hot Club of France music of Django Reinhardt and Stephan Grappelli, this hot Dutch version was as fresh as paint, even if jazz classics Honeysuckle Rose, Shine and Django`s composition Nuages (1937) were well over 60 years old.
Happily the music effortlessly heated the audience to a high degree on a freezing Tuesday night, with fearsomely fast tempos alternating with languid, virtuoso passages for maximum instrumental expression.
Opening with a trio of violinist Kliphuis, with Brits, guitarist Nigel Clarke and Roy Percy (double bass), Dutch Gypsy guitarist Paulus Schaffer joined on the third tune, How High The Moon, with breakneck rhythms and unbelievably fleet-fingered guitar runs.
