Taj Weekes & Adowa – Anthems Of Hope (duration : 2:47) On April 9th, award winning singer/songwriter/guitarist Taj Weekes and his band Adowa will release their fourth CD “Pariah in Transit.” This curious title reflects Taj’s position – a Rastafarian who hails from St. Lucia – in the overall reggae narrative, “on the outskirts trying to get in but not really being allowed to. We weren’t born in Jamaica, reggae’s birthplace, which is one of the greatest adversities we face.” (SourceTropical Fete)
4.SFJAZZ Collective with Chick Corea – Spain (duration : 13:30) This performance took place during SFJAZZ Center’s “Historic Opening Night Concert” on January 23, 2013. The SFJAZZ Collective, which roster includes alto saxophonist Miguel Zenón, tenor saxophonist David Sánchez, vibraphonist Stefon Harris, trumpeter Avishai Cohen, trombonist Robin Eubanks, pianist Edward Simon, bassist Matt Penman and drummer Obed Calvaire, will be recording and releasing a live CD in 2013 featuring the music of Chick Corea. Alvin Lee, guitarist for acclaimed blues-rock band Ten Years After, died earlier today. He was 68 years old. A statement on Lee’s website said that the singer/guitarist passed away due to complications from surgery (Source Elmore Magazine)
Ironically enough, the only known video footage of Clifford Brown is from a 1955 Soupy Sales tv show, recently discovered after being lost for 40 years. (How hip is Soupy Sales to have Clifford Brown on his show?) (Source The Aquarian)
Patrick Jarenwattananon for NPR compares (and reviews their latest works) of two drummers in their 70s : “Killer” Ray Appleton and Barry Altschul who both came of musical age in the hard-bop era, spent many years living in Europe and eventually returned to New York. (Source NPR)
The Vigil is the new Chick Corea quintet : drummer Marcus Gilmore), bassist Hadrien Feraud, guitarist Charles Altura and British saxophonist Tim Garland, “who took the piece – Tadd Dameron’s Hot House – by the scruff of the neck in a tenor-sax solo that swept the register from rugged low tones through an expressively quivery mid-range, to upper split-note wails.” They opened at Ronnie Scott’s, London on Tuesday and this is a review. Eva Cassidy must be one of those angels. “Where Edith Piaf was dreadfully sad and full of irony, Eva Cassidy’s sadness is tremblingly lovely and haunting.” The writer Tito Genova Valiente confesses his addiction to the too soon departed songbird. So sweet! (Source Business Mirror)
