The top five finalists in Ventura Music Festival's student jazz competition performed Sunday before a packed house at Zoey's Cafe in downtown Ventura.

The first-place winner, alto saxophonist Jade Elliott, 16, of Thousand Oaks, played an energetic version of "On the Sunny Side of the Street." As Sunday's top performer, she will play alongside legendary jazz musician Tito Puente Jr. at the festival's Latin Jazz Concert. The show will be at 8 p.m. Feb. 16 in the Ventura High School theater.

"I was completely shocked and excited to win because there were so many people with a lot of talent in this competition," Elliott said.

A three-person panel determined the top three performers once all the songs were completed.

The contest was open to high school students from throughout Southern California, and nine entered.

"Every year the kids get better and better and younger and younger," said Charles Levin, festival board member.
