The title of French-born guitarist and composer Stephane Wrembel’s fifth album, “Origins,” is complex — his roots are not grounded in place.
He learned to play guitar in the countrysides of France among gypsies, and his travels have melded to create a sound that is distinctively Wrembel, combining world music with a heavy dose of gypsy jazz. He studied at Berklee College of Music before settling in New York City and what he refers to as a “jungle lifestyle.”
Campfires continue to be a symbolic image of creativity for Wrembel, who describes fire as “a very powerful element that triggers fascination and a hypnotic sensation. Fire warms you up, but you can burn yourself if you are too close. It brings light in darkness and makes your shadow dance on the floor.”
Before those fire-filled nights, Wrembel has fond memories of his mom playing the piano and “hearing the sound of the drums in ‘Hotel California’ at age 2.
“Following that, I remember my mind exploding while listening to ‘The Wall’ and (seeing) the inner cover art at 5 years old,” he says.
To tell his stories through song, Wrembel relies on what he sees as three forces that guide the mind: “reality, imagination and superstition.”
“Reality and imagination are two very powerful forces, which, if understood, work amazingly well together,” Wrembel says. “Superstition is the confused state of mind that is not able to separate imagination from reality. That is what I try to achieve — reality in the service of imagination.”
To get in this creative state of mind, Wrembel relies on his morning ritual.
“I love to wake up and practice right away while brewing a fresh pot of coffee. From there, I will either be in a repetitive practice mood or in a composing one. I also like to start my day practicing classical piano.”
For a performance, Wrembel’s routine is even more precise.
