Jazz Musician of the Day: Ingrid Laubrock

All About Jazz is celebrating Ingrid Laubrock's birthday today!
Originally from Germany, Ingrid Laubrock started having music lessons at the age of four and began to play classical piano and sing in local choirs aged eight. Her first recording experience dates from that time, singing the solo voice in an arrangement for an a capella choir. Throughout her childhood she performed in church choirs and public concerts at the local music school... Read more.

Frank Foster: 'Basie Is Our Boss'

Reprinted from http://jazzwax.com

In between recording sessions and on days off, Count Basie had no problem with his musicians recording on their own. Basie knew that if he wanted to hang onto the titanium talent he had on board, he'd be well-served to give his men the economic and creative freedom they wanted. Jazz fans are certainly better off for Basie's policy. That's how all of those terrific Frank Wess recordings were possible in the '50s for Savoy and other labels.
Frank_Foster_vogue
Wess' reed-mate Frank Foster also took advantage of Basie's leeway—but not nearly as frequently and mostly as a sideman. One of the small-group albums he recorded as a leader during his years with the Count was Basie Is Our Boss. The album was recorded in February 1963 for Argo during one of Basie's many extended club stays in Chicago and in between the band's Hits of the 50's and 60's and More Hits of the 50's and 60's recording sessions in January and April.
51TOaE7FhZL._SL500_AA300_
On the Basie Is Our Boss date were Al Aarons (tp), Frank Foster (ts) Eric Dixon (ts,fl), John Young (p), Buddy Catlett (b) and Philip Thomas (d). All were relatively new additions to Basie's band, except Young and Thomas, who were Chicago players. Foster, of course, joined in 1953. Dixon joined Basie in '61 from Quincy Jones' orchestra. Aarons came aboard in '62, and Catlett, another Jones alumni, joined in '60.
One of the many reasons why this album is so special is how Foster's arrangements make so few sound like so many. If you didn't know how many musicians were on the date, you'd swear there were more. Another reason why this album is special is Foster's evolving sound, shifting from big band player to small-group leader.
Images
There are six tracks—Vested Interest, Why Try to Change Me Now?, May We, Samba Blues, Kelly Blue and I've Got a Lot of Living to Do.
The first track is a blues original by Foster, the second is a standard and a ballad showcase for Foster, the third is a Foster hard-bop blues, Samba Blues is a light latin blues credited to Esmond Edwards—the session supervisor and cover photographer—and Kelly Blue by Wynton Kelly is taken at a jaunty pace. The final track, a standard, is perhaps the oddest on the album. Taken mostly in 6/8 time, it features Foster widening-out in a Wayne Shorter mode.
Images-1
Interestingly, the arranging here by Foster isn't in the Basie vernacular. Instead, he seemed to be starting to arrange for the strength of a small group and its individual players rather than shrinking a big band into six parts. While his charts make the group seem larger, there's a certain soul here that transcends the formality of Basie's orchestra.
Frank-Foster-Fearless-Frank-Foster
By December 1965, Foster would be leading a series of excellent soul-funk sessions for Prestige. Basie Is Our Bosswas just the warm up.

Be Part of Something Massive – The Tech Music School Enrolment

The curriculum of traditional music schools was built around the works of classical composers and the jazz movement for many years. However, for those that wish to undertake a structured and recognized course to lead into a career which will see them become a professional musician, the options are endless with the courses provided by one ever-growing establishment.

Within their 30 years’ experience in popular music educationTech Music School (TMS) has seen a stream of talented young musicians, producers and songwriters pass through their doors to undertake courses ranging from diploma to masters level, who are now flourishing within the music industry and working with the likes of Adele, Jessie J, One Direction and Marina and the Diamonds to name just a few.
Continuing to open their doors up for another year to people across the UK and abroad, TMS combine quality teaching methods with nurturing the passion of each individual to see them flourish within an industry that is ever-changing; and if you’re an overseas student, this is the perfect time to get on board as around 40% of TMS students are from outside the UK.
Andrew Bates, Principal of Tech Music School discusses the variety of personal and professional education they offer, ‘Over time, Tech Music School has evolved from being a solely a performance-based School to nurture talent across all aspects of the commercial music industry with a range of new courses. The success of our students is not only down to raw talent, but the hard work all our staff put in to help students reach their full potential.’
The growth of TMS has been apparent since day one; however the next 12 months will see the biggest expansion the School has undergone in regards to their courses and their premises. Offering more in terms of course options, with the introduction of Music Production, Music Business and Songwriting, they have made the transition from music school to ‘industry within the music industry’. These courses provide students with core skills of working within the industry without necessarily needing to pick up an instrument, appealing to those wanting to step into entrepreneurial or production roles.
As well as the exciting introduction of new courses, the School is expanding its premises with a £3million investment to enable it to support its students with state of the art facilities. TMS ensure they equip their students with the tools to be successful within an industry where no two days are ever the same, and with lecturers that are working actively within the music industry, students can be confident that they are receiving the best advice before leaving and heading into a career – something many education facilities often miss.
With all the up and coming changes, it’s never been a better time to be part of the Tech Music School family. To discover more about the courses available in October, as well as what else is on offer from this London based school, visit their website here: http://www.techmusicschool.co.uk

Cilla Black: 'Is It Love?' (1965)

Reprinted from http://jazzwax.com

Screen shot 2012-09-23 at 6.46.58 PM
Back while I was doing research in preparation for my Wall Street Journal interview with Sir George Martin in August, I listened to virtually everything he produced—before, during and after the Beatles. I tend to do enough research to write a book. It's just my way. [Pictured above: Cilla Black with Sir George Martin]
Cilla-black-is-it-love-parlophone
At any rate, while listening to all of Cilla Black's Parlophone recordings, I came across Is It Love?, a beautiful ballad written by Bobby Willis, a British songwriter who became Cilla Black's husband and manager. He died in 1999. Johnny Pearson, who orchestrated, died in 2011.
Cilla-Black-Is-It-Love--333525
Is It Love?
was released in January 1965 and went to #2 in the U.K. Most important, Black appeared later that year inFerry Cross the Mersey, a rock-and-roll musical film designed to showcase Brian Epstein's other hit-making acts from Liverpool. Interestingly, the title song by Gerry and the Pacemakers was originally written for the film before being released as a hit single in the U.K. and the U.S.
Here, from the film, is Cilla Black singing (or more likely lip-syncing) Is It Love?—my second favorite single of hers after Alfie. Dig Sir George's touch...

New App on Spotify Makes Discovering Jazz Music Interactive

Blue Note, a new music-discovery app for jazz, sneaked its way intoSpotify's top 10 apps list this week.
The app aggregates the eclectic music catalog -- dating back to 1939 -- from EMI's Blue Note Records and presents the music in an interactive timeline complete with filters.
"The super fan can rummage through every recording session their favorite drummer played on while the casual music fans can discover jazz through samples by Madonna or The Beastie Boys,"Charlotte RobertsonEMI North America's VP of digital marketing, tells Mashable.
Blue Note separates into three sectors: "Tradition" housestraditional jazz music; "Groove" showcases artists who blend jazz with funk, soul and hip-hop; and "Voices" presents songs from artists not necessarily known for performing jazz. The app also lets users filter the catalog by instrument:
Many of the songs in Blue Note's archives have been sampled on other people's tracks from one decade to the next. The "Blue Break Beats" tab in the app lets you hear the originals and the samples:
Put simply, Robertson says, the app "allows both the educated aficionado to dig through each release in every possible way and also balance that with features like Blue Note break beats that allow new fans to enjoy discovering and connecting with Blue Note."

Here are the current top 10 apps on Spotify, with Blue Note positioned at No. 10:
Do you think more record labels should create music-discovery apps for their archives?

Why we must fight to keep jazz alive

Digby Fairweather, a renowned British jazz writer and musician, says it is time to fight for the great music of jazz.

By Digby Fairweather
8:00AM BST 20 Sep 2012

It was back in l961 that an author called Henry Pleasants wrote a book about jazz called Death of a Music. At that point in 20th-century culture he could have been forgiven for undue pessimism because jazz, more than half a century ago, was still regularly hailed as America’s principal contribution to world culture. Had Pleasants owned a crystal ball, however, he might have shocked himself with his prescience.
Within two years, the arrival of the Beatles and the rock revolution - probably the most stunning of its kind ever to transform popular culture – would send jazz skidding helplessly into a cultural siding from which it has never since emerged.
And yet – somehow, stranded within that artistic siding – the music has survived until now; not with honours but with a display of durability that has consistently defied and survived the suffocating blanket of the popular music industry. Killing a self-expressive art form is probably a contradiction in terms (at least as long as humanity survives). But you can lock it away in a cultural fortress from which even its most vivid and cogent statements won't be heard. And that is what has happened – and, by and large, is happening still - to jazz.
It would be as needlessly destructive to suggest that what happened constituted an act of deliberate suppression as it would be naïve to suggest that it was completely accidental. But in order to understand what’s gone on in the music’s cultural demotion it’s necessary – however briefly - to re-wind 50 years of what now is popular music history.
It began as the sun rose on the 60s, when the stale winds of Tin Pan Alley’s commercial fare were blown away by fresh breezes from the Mersey. Until then - despite the emergence of Elvis Presley and his contemporaries – pop music had never set up serious challenges to the intellectual and musical superiority of jazz which, for the majority of young musical people, remained the dominant youth culture. The new arrivals from Liverpool – whose emergence, highly significantly, coincided with the progression of the baby-boom generation into young adulthood – were in a strong position to make the changes they did. Not only did they redefine the parameters of popular music but retained – like Presley - the seductive image of the minstrel serenading his lover to the accompaniment of his guitar.

Jazz & Blues Vocalist Pamela Rose Launches “Wild Women of Song” YouTube Series

"Pamela Rose presents Wild Women of Song" is a captivating showpiece celebrating the lives, times and music of the women songwriters of early jazz and blues. Critically acclaimed vocalist Pamela Rose features new YouTube episodes every "Wild" Wednesday!

San Francisco, CA (PRWEB) September 20, 2012
Critically acclaimed jazz and blues vocalist Pamela Rose officially unveils her weekly YouTube series “Wild Women of Song” to audiences worldwide. The program is a captivating video showpiece celebrating the lives, times and music of the women songwriters who contributed to some of the most enduring standards of early jazz and blues. Discussion topics range from the beloved Bessie Smith and Peggy Lee - to lesser-known yet equally important songwriters including María Grever, Bernice Petkere, and Tot Seymour.
"Wild Women of Song" on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/WildWomenOfSong
“What’s really curious is that the histories of some of these women [songwriters] had almost been entirely obliterated. They were left out of books about [jazz and blues]. There weren’t that many images of them floating around” says Rose. “I began to be so fascinated with their lives. There was sexism, there was a lot of racism…and if you were a traveling musician you were facing a lot of horrendous life on the road stories.”
New segments are posted every “Wild” Wednesday. Episodes include elements of conversational storytelling, rare archival footage, special guest appearances, and interactive audience Q&A.
Rose’s “Wild Women of Song” YouTube series is the latest extension of her ongoing research project about the women songwriters of American Popular Song. Her live concert and stage show "Pamela Rose presents Wild Women of Song,” continues to be performed to capacity audiences at performing arts centers, jazz clubs and festivals, non-profit fundraisers and educational centers from Los Angeles to London.
“The Wild Women of Song project, both as a touring concert, and as ongoing research…is intended to repair a cultural amnesia regarding the contributions of women to the history of jazz and blues” says Rose. “If you are interested in songbook, blues, jazz, women, the history of the times - feel free to tune on in and subscribe.”
“Wild Women of Song” is a production of Hype Creation Studios (http://www.hypecreation.tv). Hype Creation is a digital media production group offering YouTube channel development for members of the creative community looking to engage and expand their audiences with emotionally resonant and intellectually stimulating video content.

Fab 50's Vocalist: Vicky Lane

By now I'm sure you know I dig obscure, dynamic female jazz vocalists who recorded in the 1950s. In the past, I've raved about Betty Bennett, Doris Drew, Jane Fielding, Marcy Lutes, Mavis Rivers, Peggy Connelly, Thelma Gracen and Toni Harper. And for your convenience, they're all linked to my posts down the right-hand side, under "Fab '50s Vocalists." Today I want to introduce you to Vicky Lane's I Swing for You (RCA).
Vicky Lane
The album was recorded in Hollywood in 1959. What makes it extra special is that the combo was arranged and conducted by Pete Candoli. The personnel included Candoli on trumpet, Barney Kessel on guitar, Johnny Williams and Jimmy Rowles on piano, Joe Mondragon on bass with Alvin Stoller, Larry Bunker, Milt Holland, Lou Singer, Ralph Hansell, Johnny Cyr and Gene Estes alternating on drums and a range of percussion instruments, including chimes, xylophone, vibraphone, bongos and tympani.

Born in Ireland (nee Coghlan), Lane was an American actress who was married to Candoli between 1953 and 1958. Her singing voice on this album is deep, melodic, hip and upbeat, akin to Jo Stafford—though Lane's range was a little higher. As Billboard noted in its December 1959 mention of the album, "Watch this girl, she has talent." Oddly, this was the only LP she recorded.
Lane did record two singles with Candoli in Screen shot 2012-09-19 at 9.15.16 PM1955 for Sunset Records. The songs were 'S Wonderfulbacked by I Ain't Got Nothing But the Blues, and Global Blues backed by I Love a Parade. Given the odd titles and range here, these were likely made to serve as demos, and Candoli was able to get her some press. As Billboard noted in December 1955 in a squib...
"Pete Candoli backs up his Mrs. here with some wailin' blues trumpet tones. The lady shows some fine feel for the blues idiom on her first outing on wax."
Thanks to Billboard we also know that Lane signed with RCA in February 1959, after Candoli brought her to the attention of Bob Yorke, head of the label's West Coast operations.
Screen shot 2012-09-19 at 9.15.04 PMAll of the tracks on I Swing for You are brightly arranged in the '50s Hollywood vernacular. The 12 breezy tracks areThe Trolley Song, Our Very Own, My Romance, You Hit the Spot, Love Isn't Born (It's Made), My Heart Stood Still, They Say It's Wonderful, The Song Is You, Long Ago and Far Away, I Love You, Right as the Rain and This Heart of Mine.
Attention female vocalists: There are a handful of Screen shot 2012-09-19 at 9.14.52 PMsleepers here that you may want to explore: Our Very Own, You Hit the Spot, Right as Rain and This Heart of Mine.
Also, a word about Candoli's orchestration. As you listen to the clip below, remember how relatively small this combo is. Amazing what you can do with the right core instrumentenation—trumpet, guitar, vibes and drums). Sounds much larger.
Lane died in August 1983 at the young age of 57. Hopefully Tara Candoli, her daughter with Pete Candoli, will reach out. Vicky Lane was a special vocalist, and perhaps in the weeks ahead I can provide more details about her singing career.
JazzWax tracks: Out of print, this album is selling for over $100 as an 41A8G6BG01L._SL500_AA300_LP at eBay but for around $14 on CD here. You also may be able to find it at download sites.
JazzWax clip: Here's Vicky Lane singing You Hit the Spot from I Swing for You. Please note that the model who appears on the album cover used for this clip is not Vicky Lane and that Lane's first name is misspelled there. Dig the smart, tight arrangement by Candoli and Lane's intonation throughout as she surfs the tempo...

Blossom & Bee

Hailed as "the next important jazz singer" (Don Heckman, La Times), Sara Gazarek recently recorded Blossom & Bee, her debut for the Palmetto label. Blessed with a beautiful, translucent voice, Gazarek is a strikingly original artist who continues to blur the line between innovation and emotional integrity. For her new project, she is joined by her all-star LA-based trio with guest appearances from guitarist-singer John Pizzarelli and the project s producer Larry Goldings on organ, piano and melodica.

Blossom & Bee is just the latest accomplishment in a career that is already filled with milestones. Sara Gazarek moved to Los Angeles in 2000 to attend the Thorton School of Music at USC, where she formed an important and lasting mentorship with Grammy Award-winning bassist John Clayton. In 2003 Sara won the Downbeat Award for Bess Collegiate Jazz Vocalist, which led to joining the Concord Jazz Festival tour, performing alongside Karin Allyson, Diane Schuur and Oleta Adams.
