KPKK to popularise jazz music

KUALA LUMPUR,  (Bernama) - The Information Communication and Culture Ministry (KPKK) is planning to popularise jazz music in a bid to foster and strengthen unity among the multi-racial people in Malaysia.

ts secretary-general Datuk Seri Kamaruddin Siaraf said this was because jazz musical genre was seen to have been loved by many people in this country regardless of their race. 
"As there are many jazz music enthusiasts in the country, we should popularise the music in line with the ministry''s aspiration to popularise arts and culture," he told reporters after opening the Unesco International Jazz Day celebration at the National Academy of Arts, Culture and Heritage (Aswara) here today. 

He said the ministry''s Music Division had also been asked to prepare a working paper on the matter. Earlier in his speech, Kamaruddin also called for a Kuala Lumpur Jazz Music Festival to be held in a bid to popularise the music and lure more tourists to Malaysia. 
"The annual Borneo Jazz Festival, for example, has been held for the past seven years in Sarawak and it has become the most awaited event for jazz enthusiasts across the world," he said. 

Kamaruddin said the festival which was scheduled for May 12 to 15 would also generate extra income of RM15 million for the people in Sarawak, especially Miri. The Unesco International Jazz Day, which is the first in its series, is aimed at enhancing public awareness on the role of jazz music in promoting universal values.
