As part of its ongoing Nihongo Fiesta festivities, the Japan Foundation, Manila (JFM) celebrates great Japanese food and music with a Wagashi Lecture and Demonstration at The Podium and a jazz concert at SM City North Edsa this February.
Unit Asia, a jazz band including Japanese as well as Malaysian and Thai musicians, will perform on Feb. 13 at 8 p.m. at the Skydome at SM City North Edsa.
A formidable jazz band that has performed all over Asia, as well as in Turkey and Egypt, Unit Asia features Japanese musicians Miyoshi Isao on the guitar, Noritake Hiroyuki on drums, and Ippon Shigeki on bass. Malaysian pianist Tay Cher Siang and Thai saxophonist Koh Mr. Saxman also are also part of this multicultural band.
The group, with its varied cultural backgrounds is slowly but surely reviving the jazz scene with their passion for music. Isao leads the band with his open minded musical style, Koh adds up the emotional rendering, while Noritake brings life into the band through his superb drumming. Tay, on the other hand, uses his dynamism in compositions, while Ippon mixes a steadfast rhythm.
Unit Asia’s Southeast Asian tour was coordinated by JFM and Planet Arts Co., a company that promotes both independent and major Asian artists.
Mallgoers will likewise have the rare opportunity to see Wagashi: Japanese Traditional Confectionery Lecture and Demonstration on Feb. 18 from 1:30 -4 p.m. at the Atrium of The Podium.
Wagashi, or Japanese traditional confectionery, is often served with tea – especially those made with fruits, mochi, and azuki bean paste. These are not only delicious, but also beautifully and exquisitely crafted "food artistry that can be enjoyed by the five senses".
The lecture and demonstration highlight the rich history of Japanese culture, which lectures and demonstrations such as these hope to help educate the young. Three young Japanese pastry chefs who have developed their skills with the illustrious confectioneries of Japan will be taking part in this event.
Noriyuki Myojin is part of the Mitsuya-honpo, a renowned confectionery in the Hiroshima Prefecture; Keisuke Yoshihashi is part of Yoshihasi Kashijo, one of the three famed confectionery areas of Japan; and Naoya Koizumi is part of Koundo Honten, a historic confectionery house.
The Center of Culinary Arts (CCA), the pioneer culinary school in the Philippines, which has a branch at The Podium, will serve as the venue for the preparation of the traditional Japanese sweets. CCA students will also be assisting the wagashi chefs during the preparations and the demonstration itself.
A joint project of JFM and SM, these events aim to promote a vibrant cultural exchange between Japan and the Philippines.
