From 9 pm until 5 am: The second Night of
Organ Music in Passau's St. Stephan Cathedral was a highlight for music fans.
Special illumination and meditative moments with recitals and pictures that
were projected on video screens completed the art evening.
Barbara Dennerlein
played the counterpart to the row of classical educated well-established
organists. In the press release the question was asked: "Does she damend
everything from the world's biggest catholic church organ? Or is it the other
way round? Does the queen of instruments demand everything from the world-wide
celebrated Jazz Queen Barbara Dennerlein? However the music-royal competition
may end, one thing is for sure: a big dream has become true.
Barbara Dennerlein always wanted to play the Organ at the Cathedral with its 233 stops and 17,974 pipes. Now this huge orchestra of pipes providing a phenomenal variety of sounds will swing and impress under the hands and feet of Barbara. "Definitely a challenge ", she says, "thrilling and inspiring". Rhythm is the basis of jazz. What about the acoustic, the delay in the Cathedral that measures more than hundered meters? How may the grooves develop from the console in St. Stephan that she usually plays with her famous Hammond B3?
Will the "Holy Blues" work, or the funky arrangements? Even though many questions have to be solved by the artist, one thing is for sure: "I feel Jazz and I can only play this kind of music honestly". She wants to create emotions, move the people with her unique music that has made her popular in the whole world. Dedication and exertion (German has the same word for both) literally with hands and feet need power - and give power to others in the same moment. "Create something with the energy of your life". This may be a kind of personal message of the artist. "Every human being is unique and extraordinary" - yes, like the sounds in this organ night.

Of course, it's not the
first time that the German Jazz artist plays a church organ. Sure, she can play
Bach. But she is a jazz musician and will always be. She wants to create
something new and she wants to enjoy life with her playing. She prefers to
write own compositions for pipe organs like "Spiritual Movement" or
"Waltzing Pipes". It is a means for her to express herself.
Artists like Barbara Dennerlein live from feelings and this is what they gain for. The audience shall feel relaxed. They may experience freedom and wideness to find to their inner-most feelings.
And Dennerlein receives great feedback. The uncomplicated and unpretentious musician attends the audience after the show for a talk. And so she experiences a reflection of impressions that proove to her: once again she has built a bridge between the musician's and the audience's feelings. Since many years she has a large international fan community.
Interestingly, the city of Passau has played a role at the beginning of her career. Still in school, the teenager Barbara played her first concerts during the holidays in a small jazz club, the "Piano-Keller". Thus, Passau belongs to her musical roots. The city, where now a big dream comes true for Barbara Dennerlein."
To make it short: Barbara Dennerlein fulfilled the audience's expectation. "It was an extraordinary task to find the best registrations for the in fact five organs that are played on one console" she reported. With meticulous preparation the artist succeeded in creating unusual and impressive sounds. "The audience was enthused. I also received commendations from my colleagues for my registrations and my performance. I am very happy about that because it was really much work to prepare for the concert and I succeeded in creating new and impressive sounds at this wonderful instrument. It has been a big challenge"
After the concert many fans surrounded the organist. "I love church organs when they are played in such a brilliant way", "It was very interesting and personal what you said about the organ" or "Don't you have weals under your fingers...?" were some of the comments. Or simply "Thank you for this wonderful concert."
Applause was guaranteed for all organists of this concert night. But - is it a special habit in jazz concerts compared to classic performances? - only Barbara Dennerlein got intermediate applause, after her impressive bass solo. "I'm excited about these positive reactions and about the success!" she said after the concert.
