Jam session to honor Columbia musician Lyle Harris

A local music venue will hold a jam session next weekend to honorLyle Harris, a respected jazz musician and former Columbia resident who died July 1.
The open jam session will be held at Mojo’s, 1013 Park Ave., from 6 to 8 p.m. on Sept. 18.
“Lyle was an old friend and musical inspiration to me," said John Stewart, a friend of Harris and organizer of the event. "He was an integral part of the music scene here since the '50s, and many people were hoping to get together in some context to remember him.”
The starting band will include Stewart and members of Harris' band from the 1970s. Stewart said he has heard from other players who intend to come, including local favorites Tom Andes, Hillis Crowell and Tony Lotven.
Anyone who wants to play is invited, and all are welcome. Admission is free.
Another jam session will be held in Springfield from 2 to 4 p.m. on Sept. 17 at Millie’s Cafe, 13 S. Jefferson. - BY JULIANNE HILMES
