The life and times of
Charlie "Bird" Parker have been so well documented that it is
needless to repeat the story here except to say that this was truly one of the
most gifted jazz musicians of the 20th Century. "I Can't Get Started"
was composed by Vernon Duke and Ira Gershwin, and although introduced by Bob
Hope in the Ziegfield Follies of 1936, the song was first popularly recorded by
Bunny Berigan that same year. The song is a jazz standard performed by many
including in this instance Charlie Parker's dramatic rendition recorded during the
last few years of his life in the early 1950's.
