Soulful
yet experimental, Xenia Rubinos has a no-holds-barred approach to her sound,
utilizing everything from jazz to punk with a heavy Spanish influence. With
just bass and drums, "Pan y Cafe" is a wild ride with hard-core punk
drumming and frenzied, fun Spanish lyrics.
Then
"Elephant" is a quiet, soft piece featuring the singer's keyboard and
vocal (this time in English) prowess. Hailing from Brooklyn, N.Y., Rubinos has
been a hot commodity for the past couple of years, touring Europe and the U.S.
and having a strong showing at the 2011 South by Southwest festival. Drummer
Marco Buccelli's tight yet freeing rhythms add much to Rubinos' sound.
