This year, the
country was reminded of what Chicagoans have known for decades: Saxophonist Von
Freeman is a jazz treasure. Recently named a National Endowment for the Arts
Jazz Master, Freeman (who turns 88 this fall) finally received due recognition
for his powerful, inventive approach and his generous ongoing mentorship.
So
Chicago fittingly brought the celebration back home with this heartfelt tribute
as the opening night to the Made In Chicago:
World Class Jazz series at
Millennium Park's Jay Pritzker Pavilion on July 28.
