Headliners for the 2011 Savannah Jazz Festival will include Wycliffe
Gordon, Pat Martino and Super Chikan.
“This year is our 30th festival,” said Skip Jennings, first
vice-president of the Coastal Jazz Association. “I think we’ve got another
great lineup of music this year.
Best of all, there’s enough music for more than a week. “Everyone
focuses on three days, but it is an eight-day festival,” Jennings said. “It
will start on Sept. 18 with a jam session with the area’s best jazz musicians,
both local and regional, which always starts the festival.
“On Monday, Sept. 19, we’ll have our film,” he said. “This is the fourth
year we’ve done a film as part of the festival. This year we’re showing ‘Ninety
Miles’ about the Cuban jazz scene.”
The Howard Paul Group, with Jody Espina on saxophone, Scott Giddens on
the Hammond B-3 organ and Howard Paul on the guitar, will perform Sept. 20. Two
groups will perform
Sept. 21 — the George Petit 4 and Bob Masteller & the Jazz Corner Quintet. “They played on Wednesday last year and everyone just loved them,” Jennings said.

On Sept. 22, the action will move to Forsyth Park for Blues Night.
“We’re trying to feature local blues artists, so we’re starting off with
Bottles and Cans and Eric Culberson,” Jennings said.
“Our headliner at 9:30 p.m. will be Super Chikan of Mississippi,”
Jennings said. “He’s incredible. He’s the real deal, sort of a folk artist who
makes his own guitars.”
Savannah’s own Huxsie Scott will perform Sept. 23 in Forsyth Park.
“We’ve had her perform with the Hall of Fame All Stars over the past 15 years,”
Jennings said. “This year, we’re featuring her on her own. Huxsie was featured
on our poster this year. We decided to give Huxsie the spotlight.”
The Stan Killian Quartet will perform, followed by the final act, the
University of North Florida Jazz Ensemble. “This year, they’re playing with a
great guitarist and singer, Allan Harris,” Jennings said.
On Sept. 24, the Jazz Composers Sextet will perform. “This is something
new we’re trying,” Jennings said.
