Jazz and arts festival set for Lakefield

By NATELIE HERAULT, Special to The Examiner
LAKEFIELD — The 13th annual Lakefield Jazz Art and Craft Festival will feature a full 12 hours of music, as well as nearly 30 different artisans and crafters. It will be held Saturday, July 9 at Isabel Morris Park, behind the arena and beside the Otonabe River.

The 17-piece Ron Marenger Band will kick off the music at 11 a.m. with what festival organizer Verne Hope describes as a Dixieland, old-time jazz sound. Although Marenger died in 2007, the group honours their founder by continuing to use his name.

Hope said that this year's biggest name is Robi Botos, who has won many awards for his jazz piano including National Jazz Awards' Keyboardist of the Year and a Juno award nomination in 2006. Botos and his quintet will hit the stage at 6:30 p.m.

Artisans and crafters will be set up from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The mostly local exhibitors will be selling everything from wood furniture to oil paintings and gourd art. There will be a 10-by-20-metre tent for audience members to sit under, with between 200 to 300 seats, Hope said. As the event usually draws an attendance of more than 1000 people, jazz fans are encouraged to bring their own chairs to ensure a seat.

M.O.M.'s Mobile Kitchen and Stoney Lake Baking Company will be catering the event, with dishes including pulled pork on a bun, chicken breast on a bun, dessert and more. As well, the event is licensed and will likely feature both beer and wine, said Smith-Ennismore-Lakefield parks and recreation administrative assistant Heather English.

"The event hasn't changed much over the years, but we've had some big names come through," said Hope, adding that the late Rob McConnell and the Boss Brass performed in the past.
