Today I'm delighted to announce the launch of The Jazz Toolkit. The toolkit is a unique selection of jazz tuition material which will consist of a series of detailed modules on individual topics relating to learning jazz.
I've deliberately focused on making the modules accessible and easy to follow and if you're already a regular reader here at PlayJazz, you'll have an idea of the style. Even better, you can download a free jazz Toolkit module on the topic of intervals and see for yourself.
The idea for the toolkit was born from conversations with several of my own students who came to me after struggling to teach themselves from tutor books.
The idea for the toolkit was born from conversations with several of my own students who came to me after struggling to teach themselves from tutor books.
I heard over and over again that they'd struggled because tutor books didn't explain things in enough detail and covered so many topics that they couldn't decide what to focus on. This resulted in them flitting from one subject to another without absorbing any of the material properly.
There are some great tutor books around, but physical copies of books are expensive so they have to be as concise as possible to keep the costs down. They can't afford the time and space to go into real detail on particular topics or give several examples to reinforce your understanding of key points. They tend to say things once and if you don't get it - well, that's that!
The Jazz Toolkit is different. Because the modules are e-books in PDF format, they can really go into detail and talk you through a topic step-by-step. Each module will focus onone subject so you don't get distracted and and you never end up paying for information you don't need yet.
Each module will cost $8.00 which will work out roughly about £5.00 or €6.00 based on today's exchange rates (03/06/2011). Obviously rates can vary so the sterling and euro figures are just a guide.
It can be hard to find a good teacher - especially if you're not in a big city. I honestly believe that the Jazz Toolkit is going to be a really useful and unique resource for people teaching themselves to play. Actually, even if you already have a teacher, the individual modules can be a great way to brush up on a particular area and work on any weaknesses or gaps in your existing knowledge.
There are two modules available at the moment, the free trial module on intervals and a module available for purchase which is all about pentatonic scales.
Over the coming weeks and months, I'll be adding more modules and the next one is well underway as I write this. However, you also have the opportunity to request a moduleand I've promised to work through the suggestions in order of popularity, so the more people that request a topic, the sooner it will appear on the site.
Finally, I want everyone who uses the Jazz Toolkit to enjoy it and find it useful. If for any reason you're not happy with a module then I'm offering a %100, no quibble, money-back guarantee.
If The Jazz Toolkit sounds like something you could benefit from, I hope you'll head over to www.thejazztoolkit.com and check it out. If you like what you see and you're a fellow blogger or twitter user, I'd really appreciate it if you could help spread the word that this new resource is available.
If it's not your cup of tea, not to worry. Whilst I'll post details on this blog as and when new toolkit modules become available, PlayJazz will continue to churn out the jazz flotsam and jetsam as usual every Thursday. Talking of which, the final installment of10 things pub rock bands can learn from jazz musicians was posted yesterday if you haven't already seen it.
