The Importance of Jazz Education
What could be more significant than encouraging the creativity of our young people and developing an audience for America's home-grown classical music? For Bret Primack, aka the Jazz Video Guy, not much. “The future of Jazz, in fact the future of this very planet, lies in the hands of our young people. The global Jazz education movement is a shining light of possibility in a world that has run amok in negativity.”
Mr. Primack, whose seven hundred posted videos now average twenty five thousand daily views and over nineteen million total looks, reports that “one only need attend the annual Jazz Education Network Conference to feel the overwhelming positive energy and joy people experience when they learn how to play and appreciate Jazz, and, how it changes the lives of so many young people.”
Bret's new film, taken from interviews and performances at the 2011 JEN Conference in New Orleans, includes leading educators, musicians, and students on why Jazz Education is so imperative. In addition to performance excerpts featuring Dr. Michael White’s Quartet, Shelly Berg, theLouisville Leopard Percussionists and Terell Stafford with Caleb Chapman’s Little Big Band, interview subjects include: Claire Daly, Diane Downs, Founder and Director of Louisville Leopard Percussionists, Nick Phillips of Concord Records, Frank Alkyer of Down Beat, NEA Jazz Master David Liebman, Lee Mergner of Jazz Times, Alfonso Monturo, Kitty Margolis, Fred Bouchard, Terell Stafford, John Clayton, Randy Klein of Jazzheads, Shelly Berg and Jamey Aebersold.
