From Barbara Dennerlein....jun 2011

Hammond vs. E-Board

The electronic keyboard has been invented only a few decades ago but nevertheless the development traces so many legendary instruments that a museum, the Eboardmuseum, has been established in Klagenfurt, Austria.

It shows the history with a tremendous collection of organs, keyboards and other exhibits on a 1,400 sq m large showroom. A couple of days ago Barbara Dennerlein stopped by for a duo concert with Argentine drummer Alex Sanguinetti. The run was so huge that additional chairs must be lent from a restaurant in the neighborhood.

The audience was rapt away and also the musicians were enthused by the atmosphere. The concert ended in a session where Fabiano Pereira (git) and Wolfgang Schreiner (sax, vocal) joined in. Barbara reports: "The whole concert was like a magic moment. I just wanted to give all the best and I did." The photos from that concert on top of the newsletter have been taken by Georg Tielenius Kruijthoff. You can find more on: http://www.cityfoto.at/fotogalerien/customized/30/

Radio flashback

The radio station Deutschlandradio has established a series with prominent guests presenting her music selections with the motto "Classic, Pop et cetera". In a flashback two sequels with German jazz musicians behind the microphone have been re-broadcasted: trumpet and horn player Till Brönner had presented a show in 1997, Barbara Dennerlein two years earlier.

She has been already back from New York where she had recorded her CD "Take Off!", the first album for Verve. She reported that writing, arranging and recording with so many great musicians at the legendary Power Studios has been much fun for her.

Besides two tracks from the brand new album Barbara presented also music from US3, Barbara Streisand, Vince Jones or the Yellowjackets. Announcing "Tell Her You Saw Me" Barbara said "Pat Metheny has achieved something that I'm dreaming of, too, he recorded with a symphonic orchestra,..." Well, only a few years later she put it into practice with her album "Change Of Pace"!

Concerts in June

The 19. Düsseldorf Jazzrally is a three days festival with concert venues all over the city. On the last festival day, June 12th, Barbara Dennerlein and her quartet with Jörg Kaufmann (sax), Fabiano Pereira (git) and Drori Mondlak (dr) plays at the Rhine terrace on 5 pm. So: get your festival button and go there!

How do you call a quartet with one person too much? Right, it's a quintet. Barbara appears at the 20th "Jazz an der Ruhr" festival in Mülheim with her quintet (with Christian Kappe, tp) at Schloss Broich on June 17th.

No joke - jazz festivals in Germany seem often to be located next to rivers, because the third concert in June is also part of a jazz festival - in Dresden at the sides of the Elbe river. Barbara plays at Schloss Pillnitz on June 26th.

Finally a solo church organ concert in Laubach at the Evangelische Stadtkirche is scheduled for June 29th.
