Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM)
Internationally renowned for its historical impact on 20th-century music, the AACM has beenat the forefront of musical innovation in composition and creative improvised music, which has come to be known as Great Black Music. Founded in 1965 by a cadre of creative musicians gathered on Chicago's South Side, this artist-led collective of musicians and composers are dedicated to nurturing, performing, and recording serious, original music.

The AACM represents three generations of compelling, creative music composers and musicians who have created an abundance of music that have new sounds and languages, and use self-made and obscure instruments. Through disciplined research, practice, and teaching, they document their innovative approach with seminal recordings and original notation.

The organization develops new generations of talent by offering free music training for city youth through the AACM School of Music and its educational programs. The AACM School is resident at Chicago State University and in Kennicott and Taylor Parks. AACM groups have performed across the US, and in Russia, Japan, Europe, and Africa. Members are regularly awarded grants and commissions to compose music for solo instrument, small ensemble, and full orchestra.

Anniversary events feature a wide range of talent that illuminates the AACM's commitment to originality and artistic development in creative music. Performances and educational events feature over thirty musicians. The AACM's boundary-breaking music celebrates a wide spectrum of jazz and new music, from soulful to avante guarde, from swinging to experimental.
