She has illuminated the stages of several legendary venues like The Whisky A GoGo in Los Angeles, Kingston Mines Blues Club in Chicago, The Central Saloon in Seattle, and many others with her sultry sound often compared to Lydia Pense (Cold Blood), Diana Krall, and Susan Tedeschi. She has also been featured in the SF Chronicle and on TimeWarner Cable Manhattan.
In her adolescent years, the songstress harmonized with award winning teen a capella group 'Til Dawn under the direction of Austin Willacy. She also studied with Terrence Kelly (Oakland Interfaith Gospel Choir) and Christine Helferich Guter (Director of Jazz Studies Cal State Long Beach). After high school, LK packed her bags and headed to Boston, pursuing her dreams at the esteemed Berklee College of Music in Boston.
A networking natural and marketing maven, she aptly graduated with a degree in Music Business and Management on the Management and Entrepreneurship tracks. As a voice principal, she trained under Grammy award winning singer/arranger Donna McElroy and drummer/arranger Kenwood Dennard (Miles Davis, Jaco Pastorius).
Upon graduating, LK jetted off to NYC to expand her horizons in the heart of America's music scene. She interned with the CEO of Atlantic Records and in Public Relations at Jazz At Lincoln Center, learning the ropes of the recording and live music industries. She wailed as the lead singer with New Orleans style band The Funky Fritters as well as performing as a solo artist...while also running her own management company, LK Management.
In 2008, LK returned to the Bay Area and joined the 8-piece soul/blues band Whiskey Hill. Complete with a full horn section, their sound was often compared to Bay Area bands Cold Blood and Tower of Power. Lilan helped secure features on KPFA 94.1 in Berkeley, KTHX 100.1 in Nevada, and a sponsorship from Jack Daniel's.
You can find Lilan Kane out and about all over the Bay Area gigging as a solo jazz artist or with her 8-piece soul band. She currently teaches voice and piano independently and at the Performing Arts Academy of Marin, as well as working at Berkeley-based jazz label Wide Hive Records. She continues to consult up and coming independent artists through her management company.
