From ‘Idol’ to Broadway: Justin Guarini Joins ‘Women on the Verge’ Musical

Months before the official opening of “Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown,” theatergoers have thrilled to each incremental casting announcement for this musical adaptation of the Pedro Almodóvar comedy, as celebrated Broadway stars like Patti LuPone, Brian Stokes Mitchell, Sherie Rene Scott and Laura Benanti were added to its ensemble. Who, these impatient observers wondered, would be cast in the final principal role of this production? Now they have their answer.

Justin Guarini, the runner-up on the first-ever season of “American Idol,” has joined the musical’s cast, Lincoln Center Theater said on Thursday. Mr. Guarini, who was edged out by Kelly Clarkson for the “Idol” crown in 2002, will play the role of Carlos, the son of Ivan (Mr. Mitchell) and Lucia (Ms. LuPone). It will be the Broadway debut of Mr. Guarini, who previously appeared in a workshop version of the Beach Boys musical “Good Vibrations” and with Ms. Clarkson in the film “From Justin to Kelly."
