Hope 4 Jazz announces 2010 lineup

John Jorgenson, one of the pioneers of American gypsy jazz music, will return to the Hope 4 Jazz Festival Saturday, July 24 at the Camden Snow Bowl

The annual Hope 4 Jazz Festival has announced the 2010 lineup, as well as a change in venue and timeframe. The music will begin 4 p.m. Saturday, July 24 at the Camden Snow Bowl, Barnestown Road.

Opening performers will be Primo Cubano from Portland, known to Midcoast dancers as a band to move to. Primo Cubano plays lively, traditional Cuban "son" dance music with a lot of excitement. Son is the most popular style to come out of Cuba and is the primary contributor to the blend of Latin styles today known as salsa.

At 6 p.m., The university of Maine at Augusta-based Steve Grover Band will perform. Jazz drummer, educator and Maine native Grover has performed with many high profile jazz musicians and is the composer of many original jazz songs. Last year, he and his band were named Best Jazz Act 2009 and One of the Ten Most Influential Bands of the Last Ten Years by the Portland Phoenix. Earlier in the day, at 2 p.m., Grover will offer a 90-minute jazz workshop. Players (bring your instruments) and listeners are invited to take part.

At 8 p.m., the John Jorgenson Quintet will be back by popular demand, having wowed the festival audience in 2008 with his always exciting Gypsy Jazz, influenced by the music of Django Reinhardt. This year marks the centennial of Reinhardt's birth. Audiences are amazed by Jorgenson's dazzling guitar work as well as his mastery as a clarinet player and vocalist.
