NINA MOFFITT is an independent young vocalist from Brooklyn, NY....

NINA MOFFITT is an independent young vocalist from Brooklyn, NY, who uses an instrumental approach to interpret music from a distinctive, genre-bending perspective. Nina learned to integrate diverse musical influences at an early age through collaborations with her father, pianist Peter Moffitt, and through studying the music of such musicians as Sarah Vaughan, Wayne Shorter and Joni Mitchell. Bossa Nova phrasing has also become pervasive in Nina's musical concept since she studied Portuguese in Brazil in 2007.

These influences led Nina to develop herself as both a storyteller and an instrumentalist alike, bridging the gap between lyrical delivery and collective improvisation. Nina attended the Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School for the Arts, where she studied classical, gospel, and jazz voice and new music composition. In 2005, Nina was granted an Honorary Mention from the National Foundation for Advancement in the Arts in the category of jazz voice, sang with the All City Jazz Band at Lincoln Center, and performed with singer-songwriter Josh Groban at Radio City Music Hall, Madison Square Garden, and on national television (ABC Good Morning America).

In May of 2009, Nina graduated with honors in cultural anthropology from Oberlin College, where she also studied at the world-renowned Oberlin Conservatory of Music under the tutelage of Wendell Logan, Paul Samuels, Marcus Belgrave, and mezzo-soprano Lorraine Manz. Nina currently resides in New York City, where she performs with her own group, the Nina Moffitt Quintet. Where I Have Been (2010) is an EP of recent arrangements by the Nina Moffitt Quintet, featuring Nina Moffitt, vocals; Tim Bennett, alto saxophone; Rafiq Bhatia, guitar & loops; Jackson Hill, bass; and Alex Morris, drums; with a guest appearance from Jordan Goldstein on alto saxophone.*

The album was engineered, mixed and produced by Alexander Overington, whose incredible contributions and creative vision propelled the music further in new directions. The album features four 10-minute compositions interpreted by Nina and the quintet, including "I Loves You Porgy," by George & Ira Gershwin and DuBose Heyward (from Porgy & Bess), "6&7," by Ravi Coltrane (BMI), "Lush Life," by Billy Strayhorn, and "Emily," by Joanna Newsom (BMI). Arrangements of "I Loves You Porgy" and "Emily" are by Nina Moffitt, "Lush Life" was collectively arranged, and "6&7" is Ravi Coltrane's arrangement. Recorded in April of 2009, engineered, mixed, and produced by Alexander Overington, mastered by Oresti Tsonopolous, with photography by Jody Rogac and album design by James Moffitt, this is an independently produced record.
