For the first time ever--- banjo maestro Tony Trischka and guitar master Frank Vignola, will share the stage at 8 pm on Saturday, Nov. 14th at the Lycian Performing Arts Center in Sugar Loaf, NY. Tickets are going fast and can be purchased at Village Music, Warwick and Van Gelder Music, Monroe.
It is not enough to say that award winning star Tony Trischka is the teacher of one of the most in-demand banjo artists on the contemporary music scene today, Bela Fleck, with whom he stole the show at Pete Seeger’s recent 90th birthday celebration at Madison Square Garden; that he has been called back several times to the David Letterman Show to perform before a national television audience; or that he is presently the teacher of a new rising banjo star on the concert circuit, musician, comedian, movie star, Steve Martin.
A native of Syracuse, New York, Trischka's interest in banjo was sparked by the Kingston Trio's "Charlie and the MTA" in 1963. Two years later, he joined the Down City Ramblers, where he remained through 1971. Today he is one of the most recorded artists in the music genre known as ‘roots.’
In 1984, he performed in his first featured film, FOXFIRE. Subsequently, his composing and playing would be featured in the movie, DRIVING MISS DAISY. Most prominently, he has become a star on many radio broadcasts including Garrison Keillor’s PRARIE HOME COMPANION as well as MOUNTAIN STAGE and FROM OUR FRONT PORCH.
One of his most popular recordings with Steve Martin and Earl Scruggs, DOUBLE BANJO BLUEGRASS SPECTACULAR, was released in 2007. In 2007 Trischka received the Banjo Player of the Year Award from the prestigious International Bluegrass Music Association and DOUBLE BANJO was also nominated for a Grammy Award.
His latest release, TERRITORY, features a plethora of acclaimed recording artists including jazz saxophonist Bill Evans, Pete Seeger, Mike Seeger, Bill Keith, and Bruce Molsky. Some of Tony Trishka’s performance partners have included The Boston Pops Orchestra, poet William S. Burroughs, Ornette Coleman, Bela Fleck, John Goodman, Levon Helms, Jane Monheit, Mark O’Conner, Odetta, Charles Osgood, Tom Paxton, The Roche Sisters, Bruce Springsteen, Jay Unger & Molly Mason, Doc Watson, and David Grisman.
Speaking of David Grisman, his first-call guitarist is Warwick resident Frank Vignola. Recently, Mr. Vignola sold-out the Pavilion of the Lycian Performing Arts Center with his tour de force critically acclaimed group, Hot Club, in a 100th Anniversary Salute to Django Reinhardt. This event is made possible through funds from Target, New York State Council on the Arts, The Puffin Foundation, and individual contributors.
