The multi-instrumentalist and composer Egberto Amin Gismonti Brazil is certainly a master of his most extensive and consistent within the Brazilian music. Born in Rio de Janeiro, in a very musical family, began his studies at the age of five. He studied flute, clarinet, guitar and piano - the latter, including as a teacher with the renowned Jacques Klein. In 1968 drew the attention of audiences and critics with his composition "The Dream".

From 1968 to 1971 resided in France, where he studied with the exponents of contemporary classical music Barraqué Jean and Nadia Boulanger. This encouraged him to return to the Brazilian musical languages and not be overly influenced by European music. In 1969 released his first album, entitled Egberto Gismonti. Returning to Brazil, was established in Teresopolis. During the 70s, Gismonti's music was the guiding hand for the instrumental and more complex structures, which complicated his relationship with the label EMI / Odeon, for which recorded.

In 1976 he recorded with the great percussionist Nana Vasconcelos, his first album for ECM, the now classic Dance of the heads. In this work, internationally acclaimed, after guitar virtuosity of Gismonti appears in all its fullness. Interestingly Gismonti only started playing the guitar seriously in 1968 after many years of systematic study of piano. In search of a vehicle more appropriate to your music and your technique, Gismonti migrated over the years, the six-string guitar on for instruments 8, 10, 12 and 14 strings. In addition, never ceased to be a virtuoso of the piano.

Back to Brazil, Gismonti spent a month among the Indians of the Upper Xingu Yawaiapiti, knowing the chief Sapaim. Communication between Gismonti and the members of the tribe gave primarily through the language of music. The experience was instrumental in the development of their next job, Sol do Meio-Dia, with the participation of rising stars on the ECM label, the saxophonist Jan Garbarek, percussionist Colin Walcott, and guitarist Ralph Towner.

From the late 70s, Gismonti became a consensus among lovers of instrumental music. Toured Europe and played with great names of jazz and world music: in addition to Nana, Garbarek, Towner and Walcott, we can also mention Herbie Hancock, Airto Moreira, Flora Purim and Charlie Haden (who attended his albums Folk Songs and Magic , 1979).

Accordion In 1985 recorded a remarkable double album: one of the CDs, Gismonti plays alone, and the other is accompanied by the Academy of Dance Group, formed by saxophonist / flutist Mauro Senise, Nene drummer and bassist Zeca Assumpção. In 1995 he recorded with the State Symphony Orchestra of Lithuania the disk Meeting Point, establishing itself as composer.

The music of Egberto Gismonti covers a wide range of sound palettes, textures, dialects, music and moods. It may sound grandiose or introspective, dramatic or playful, nostalgic or futuristic, Brazilian or East. His compositions are designed for a variety of effective instruments from the guitar solo to the symphony, through the ethnic instruments and electronic keyboards.

The main influences of his musical language, we would like Heitor Villa-Lobos, Maurice Ravel, Django Reinhardt, John McLaughlin, Baden Powell, Astor Piazzolla, the folklore of the northeastern and central-west Brazil, the indigenous music and Indian music, among other .
