Testimony - How I start play jazz piano

I have started to learn piano at the age of 17. Do you remember how this age was? You guessed right! I wanted to be popular. Being the late starter, I have developed many shortcuts so that they recognize me a good piano player. One thing is that I selected jazz piano as my target. Of course I liked jazz very much. But this is not to write my first encounter with jazz. I was hypnotised by the improvization. I felt like I could be free from all bindings of playing music once I claimed that I was playing improvisation. Of course there's chord progression and rhythm to keep. You cannot get away from the basic configuration of the tune, but nobody can say that you are not following the score, or you are making mistakes in sing along melody wiht piano. So, the more I learn about jazz, the more I feel like free. I am 66 years old and enjoy playing it because it's free. In improvisation, first thing you have to recognize is the scale. You cannot be out of scale of the key. If the key of your favorite tune is C major, you cannot use other notes than the notes that appears in C major scale, basically.

Well truth of the matter is, since the music is of human feeling, you can use any notes at all. But if you use a note that is not in the C major scale, you have to resolve to a note that is in the scale. This is where you need to learn about harmony. Is it complicated? No, nothing at all. Because the theory comes after the reality after all. The theory is devised so that you can apply it universal to all musics. Besides, you can make money teaching it. Right? In constructing music theory, the base lies if you feel comfortable with listening to the stream of notes. There are thrilling development do exist. The development has to be resolved. In classical music, "variation" is a way of improvisation of main theme. Yes, you now know that there had been improvisation in classical music.
Do you listen to Miles Davis? When Miles played with Thelonious Monk, Monk didn't play backing chord. Oh, I can't recall the title of it. I'll write here as soon as I recall it. Miles didn't want Monk to play, according to its discography. Because he had sensed that his chord progression doesn't fit with its concept of Mr. Monk. Yeah, both does what they want to do in the session. Aren't they arrogant? But you know that they are entitled to do so, aren't you. Then it can be you. Come try my way and enjoy your life. I am a jazz freak and live in Yokohama, Japan. I love Bill Evans, John Lewis, Oscar Peterson. I have enjoyed listening them all of my life of 66 years. I am still learning jazz from new herds. Don't hesitate to learn new things no matter how old you become. There're ways to get around it with your wisdom and experiences.
