I have started to learn piano at the age of 17. Do you remember how this age was? You guessed right! I wanted to be popular. Well truth of the matter is, since the music is of human feeling, you can use any notes at all. But if you use a note that is not in the C major scale, you have to resolve to a note that is in the scale. This is where you need to learn about harmony. Is it complicated? No, nothing at all. Because the theory comes after the reality after all. The theory is devised so that you can apply it universal to all musics. Besides, you can make money teaching it. Right? In constructing music theory, the base lies if you feel comfortable with listening to the stream of notes. There are thrilling development do exist. The development has to be resolved. In classical music, "variation" is a way of improvisation of main theme. Yes, you now know that there had been improvisation in classical music.
