Speaking of birthdays, Lionel Hampton would have been 100 this year. I'm producing a series of videos for Concord Records right now for their Centennial Celebration collection. In addition to Hamp, the videos, and recordings featured Ben Webster, Lester Young, Johnny Mercer, and Art Tatum.
One of the joys of my work is learning new things about musicians and this process of discovery always yields unexpected treats. This happened with Lionel Hampton and I believe the video reflects my newfound enthusiasm for the man who introduced the vibraphone to Jazz.
