NPR's Live at the Village Vanguard Series

The Village Vanguard in Manhattan's Greenwich Village has been showcasing great jazz since it opened in the 1930s. If you are offended by what you consider to be an exorbitant cover charge ($35), or if you are nowhere near New York City, worry not. The music emanating from the club, in which over a hundred live recordings have been made since the 1950s, can be enjoyed all across the globe and at no cost thanks to NPR and New Jersey's WGBO (88.3 FM in the Newark/NYC area).
NPR's 'Live at the Village Vanguard' series broadcasts performances on the air and online, and make streaming recordings available on the website. Among the featured artists in 2008 were Ravi Coltrane, Bill Charlap, and Kenny Barron. Tonight, the 7th of January, Kurt Rosenwinkel can be heard leading a quartet featuring pianist Aaron Parks, bassist Ben Street, and drummer Kendrick Scott. Also, unlike most of the concerts in the series, tonight's will be available for download.

Upcoming live broadcasts include performances by trumpeter Terence Blanchard (pictured) on February 18th, saxophonist David Sanchez on March 18th, and trumpeter Tom Harrell on April 8th.
